BOOMIE

Boomie zoomed around the corner of Camden Road like lightening on wheels. He was fourteen and fast. He named his bicycle Harley and was making more money that any newspaper delivery kid in the whole of St. Albans, Queens. He had five newspaper routes to fill in the two hours before school started. Fling! The newspaper landed dead center of the front step. Fling! It landed dead center again on the next step. Fling! Fling! Fling! This time he was not so lucky. The newspaper landed in the driveway of the last house on his route, the Caldicott home. Boomie didn’t like the Caldicotts, especially since Robyn left. He loved her and knew they treated her badly. Boomie was born with three fingers on his left hand and two on his right hand. When Boomie was a baby, his mother left him with his grandma Ally and flew off to live in St. Kitts with her boyfriend. Many of the adults in his life pitied him or talked down at him, but not Robyn. Robyn treated Boomie with respect. Boomie never could figure out how someone as special as Robyn came from a home like the Caldicotts.

While Boomie was getting the newspaper from the driveway he recognized the voice of Robyn’s brother Steven outside the porch window. As usual, he was yelling. “Why didn’t you tell me about this before, Golan?! Robyn can’t have that land! Tell me where it is. I don’t care what my mother told you, I’m the one paying you now, you do what I pay you to do! Golan! Hello?” Steven slams the receiver down, angrily. “Bastard.”

Boomie looks around before leaning in to listen for more, “Johnny! Johnny, get in here!” Johnny was Steven’s younger brother. “Pack a bag, we’re heading south.”
“What? Where south? Why?” asked Johnny
“I don’t know yet, I’m still waiting on that asshole lawyer ma chose to use. Don’t worry. By the time we reach Pennsylvania I will know one way or another.”
“Ok, but why are we going south Stevie?” Johnny asked again.
“To teach Robyn a lesson. She can’t just make us look bad and get away with it. If I have my way, she will know her place.”
“Well, if you know she is lying, then why are you even bothering with all this? You already have the money. Leave her alone.”

His brothers naive questions and comments make Steven indignant. “That’s right, I have the money and if you want to any of it, you will do what I tell you to do. You do what’s right then I’ll do what’s right. Besides, never take sides with someone who is not blood. If she gets that land there is more at stake then I can share with you right now. Something I overhead ma tell pop a long time ago. Something bigger than money. There is alot you don’t know about little brother. In time.“
“Hmmmph” Johhny mumbled as he headed upstairs to pack.
“Make sure to bring the shotgun. We might want to do a little hunting while we are there.”

“Robyn is in trouble” Boomie thought to himself. He searched his phone to see if he had her number. He didn’t. He had no way to reach Robyn but he knew he had to find one. He scribbled the name Golan on the palm of his hand with the black sharpie pen he always kept in his pocket. Just as he was leaving he saw a flicker of the venetian blinds opening from the attic window at the top of the house. He looked to the ground quickly, picked up Harley and headed to school.
